Job opportunities for space bums

The mining ship Red DwarfIs the TV series Red Dwarf becoming a reality? With all this talk of mining asteroids for their precious resources, we’re wondering how long it is before 10km long red hulks piloted by senile computers are seen cruising around the galaxy.

Asteroids could yield precious minerals such as gold, platinum and rare metals, but any businesses planning to emulate the Jupiter Mining Corporation need to pay attention to the details – the mining ship Red Dwarf ran out of Shake n’ Vac before it’s mission was completed and was alarmingly low in on After Eight mints.

But who knows, the unwashed bums of this world could soon find a new source of employment (or just become unwashed space bums like Dave Lister).

That said, currently the cheapest seat on a commercial space flight is priced at $200,000, which means it’s probably going to be a long time before one of us wakes up in deep space the morning after a Monopoly board pub crawl.
